Mateo doesn’t come from a musical family nor was he trained in classical piano from the age of 5. In fact the whole idea that he would learn to love dance music is a fluke. It was 3AM by The KLF, which was been the catalyst for Mateo’s life long dedication to dance music. It wasn’t at a warehouse rave, but in his living room, played by none other but his dad, who would only learn to know The KLF as “track number 05 on Dance Mix 93″. It wouldn’t be until 1999 where Mateo would acquire his first pair of Technic 1200s. Obsessed with the future sounds of Nu School Breaks (Whatever the hell that means), Mateo would be a regular fixture in the Vancouver rave scene from 2002 – 2009. After a brief stint of playing rap and top40 at Vancouver’s busiest Thursday night, supporting some of Vancouver’s busiest DJs Flipout, Physik and Stimulant J, he would decide that the hip hop and top40 scene wasn’t his cup of tea and dedicate his life to his first love; dance music. Fast forward to 2012, the year of the Mateo as described by himself. 10 years into the game, he brings knowledge to Vancouver’s dance floors. He looks at DJing as a way to bring people together in the name of movement. Never an anthem player, he’s always looking for a way to make people move without playing the “flavor of the week. “ 2012 sees Mateo joining forces with Slowdjs, a crew known for their appreciation of integrity in music and performance. Look for him on their website writing pieces on the blog, as 1 ½ of First Date playing bassy stuff, or in original form playing at one of Vancouver’s fine night club establishments.
