Vol. 027 – Rhombus [Stefan Z & Oliver Nickels]

STEFAN Z :: Rhombus | My Favorite Robot Recordings :: VAN
Producer and Rhombus label head Stefan Zlatarits aka Stefan Z has been surrounded by music his entire life. A strange combination of listening to his fathers Vangelis tapes as a young child in Toronto and playing piano as well as trumpet in the jazz band throughout his high school life have both contributed to his current output of music. Being submitted to the rave scene in 2000 opened his eyes to a previously foreign form of music. Instant love is the only way to describe his reaction to this new discovery. DJ’ing was the next logical step which came in 2001 and has since seen many different genres of music pass through his record box.
Releasing his first solo EP in 2010 on Berlin label Resopal Shallware marked the beginning of his production career, which continues to develop with more releases scheduled on Circle Music out of Mannheim, and his own Rhombus imprint.
Rhombus was created in 2011 out of a need to be able to release his own brand of music. The core artists behind the label are all friends that have different musical backgrounds but all share the same affliction; to produce unique forms of audio.
OLIVER NICKELS :: RHOMBUS :: VAN
Groove-heavy, synthesized, and always evolving, Oliver Nickels blends a wide range of influences with rock-solid electronic rhythms. A healthy obsession with vintage analogue gear plays a central role in his creative process along with a love for ’70′s electrofunk and ’80′s synthpop. Expect up front synth lines, spaced out melodies, and an occasional plunge into Techno’s rattling wheelhouse.
Although based in Vancouver, Canada, Oliver’s time spent in Asia’s vibrant music scene has been a lasting influence, with its thirst for pushing the limits of creativity and penchant for the unusual. He spent a few years hitting the record shops, noodle joints, and clubs in Japan and China, where he soaked up their love of boundary-pushing and open-minded club music, as well as holding residencies at Kai Bar and Vicks (Beijing), Cinderella (Jinan) and touring Shanghai, Xian and more. During the late ‘noughties’, he was also one half of the Ragdoll project, a no-limit techno duo that gained traction with a string of amped up releases on European labels Blufin, Frequenza, and Takt. Their 2009 release “Soundwave” was licensed to labels and compilations for re-release almost monthly for years later.
Currently, as the co-owner of the Rhombus label, he and fellow head honcho Stefan Z are mostly focused on fine whiskies and searching Craigslist for antique music machines, with occasional sessions sweating it out in his unairconditioned studio. Along with oiling his DJ mixer and polishing his moustache, he is throwing Rhombus label parties featuring on-point artists from all over the world, and is committed to growing Canada’s thriving electronic music community.

Griffin aka BOGL, is a self-taught DJ and music enthusiast originally from Las Vegas, NV. His mystery carries deeper than the hood of his sweater; you never quite know when he will be showcasing all new exclusive music from his friends abroad at some unique Dubstep, Hip Hop, or House music party exposing your ears to the freshest sounds you’ve yet to hear. Bogl rolls with a posse he named Soundpieces bringing in the latest and greatest artists to San Francisco for years. The charisma he carries is like that of a friendly ghost; yet his style is so mind-boggling, he basically exists as an untouchable phenomenon. He’s become known for appearing out of what might seem to be thin air, playing a cocktail of low frequency sounds that will take you to an unfathomable dimension, and then vanishing to a far off place. It makes you wonder, is it even possible Bogl really exists?

Calgary, Canada’s A-Mac has impressed since the moment he announced himself on the 108bpm scene. His take on A-Trak’s remix of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Heads Will Roll helped put North America’s Pacific Northwest on the map as a hotbed for tropical bass’ progression, and positioned himself as one of the pioneers of the Moombahton sound. Fast forward two years and the development is obvious. Attending SXSW in recent years has seen him perform at Mad Decent’s 2012 Moombahton Massive and 2011’s XLR8R Peligrosa party. Sharing the stage at these events with the worlds top DJ’s including Diplo, Craze, Brodinski, Toddla T, Dave Nada, Sabo, Toy Selecta, and Dillon Francis. A-Mac’s weekly Friday night residency at Calgary’s respected HIFI Club combined with a frequent touring and release schedule, position him as one of the busiest and consistently progressive artists coming out of Canada’s west coast. Past releases and remixes on labels such as T&A Records, Top Billin, and Burner have seen a great deal of success with his most recent Horizon EP peaking at #13 on the Beatport house releases top 100 chart. Recently signed to the UK’s Birth Records the stage is set for A-Mac to take his signature sound to across North America, Europe and beyond.
Catch A-Mac every Friday in Calgary at the HIFI club.

Yan Zombie ————Nelson BC ( Daly City , East Van Digital, Home Breaking)
Yan Zombie, member of the “REALLY GOOD” family and main producer for future-rap crew Cyphanex; is a musical enigma and modern day renaissance man whose audio influences and explorations cross many styles and genres of global bass music. Everything from quick-mix funk, soul to trap beat, hyphy , to the baddest dub and glitch to futuristic badman dancehall, grime and bashment; sometimes in the same song. his live pa/ableton electronic shows consist of original cutting edge crunk production, combined on the fly mashups and micro mixing with bizarre psychedelic interludes and gangsta aesthetic.. you are as likely to hear parts of a song from the 1930′s as something mixed and mastered yesterday.

HxdB Artist Documentary Presented By LOWPASS TV & Slowdjs:
http://getgrounded.tv/2013/03/hxdb-artist-documentary-presented-by-lowpass-tv-the-slowdjs/
The trajectory of modern electronic music has been a fascinating study in genre splintering and divergent tastes. In a few short years, we’ve heard the invasion of cutting-edge low-end sound design into all electronic genres, for better or for worse. In the best cases, such as Vancouver’s very own HxdB, the technology serves the music, allowing a prolific, visionary producer to realize a unique, deep, and eminently danceable style. His memorable DJ sets are replete with his own music; a delicious middle ground between broken-beat / worldbeat-influenced drum programming, future-house production techniques, and techno sensibilities. Expect a delicate balance of musical elements and percussive madness, and keep an eye out for his releases on Sounds of Sumo, Palms Out, Hot N Heavy, Tectonic, and future offerings coming soon on, B.YRSLF, Symbols and Disko404 to name but a few.

Vol. 019 – Max Ulis
- Posted By: RyanWells

A DJ going on 13 years, Max Ulis was first inspired by the sounds of house, trip hop, and early drum and bass. With the formation of Vancouver’s Lighta! Sound and the success of New Form’s Dubforms parties headed by Malcolm Levy and Michael Red, Max gained ground as one of North America’s first dubstep DJs. Over the past two years Max has moved away from dubstep, coming full circle with his music to reintroduce elements of his first loves, house and techno. To quote Resident Advisor’s Andrew Ryce, “Max Ulis’ increasingly diverse output could hardly be described with any one term, but it’s all united by an extremely spare and dry aesthetic. Stripped back, pitch black, and stark, he strikes an enviable balance meshing the dark with the dance floor.
