Digging this ReTwerk, and it’s age, cause Moduloktopus and this Mad Martigann character made sexellent re-use of the horns that Ryan Lewis so fittingly made such an integral element of the tune. #PopSomeTags.

In 2003 Baby Bash released his final single ‘Sugar Sugar’ , from his album ‘Tha Smokin’ Nephew’ , featuring a dude by the name of Frankie J. Looking back the original was sub par. This past March Salt Lake City based Xian included his remix of said tune on a three track EP, released with three of his contemporaries, Aztek, Gaszia and BMills.

Pigeon Hole are two Vancouver Island based producer/mc’s with a constant
evolving sound and ability to crank out next level music. Their output as
members of Sweatshop Union is evidence of leaps in style, delivery and
approach from album to album. ‘Chimp Blood’ the group’s second record out.

Their energetic live show invaded the festival circuit, notably Shambhala,
Rifflandia, as well as the world-renowned SXSW music festival in Austin, Texas.

Trading in their original blueprint for a heavier bass-driven electronic sound,
Pigeon Hole attack with all new artillery. ‘Chimp Blood’ thrashes over a
foundation of grimey synths, sampled and chopped over machine gun drum
programming, 808s, and massive bass.

An epic hybrid of music, ‘Chimp Blood’ will make you feel like you can levitate.

Canada’s Okanagan-based artist Stickybuds drops two releases with Ed Solo for 4/20 titled Smoke the Weed and Joker Smoker. Tonight he celebrates by performing  4/20 @ Spiritbar, in Nelson, BC - saving the eccentric holiday for some of his premier fans.

This has marked the 22nd release for Sticky, and following this spring and summer will be his biggest tour yet with over 20 locations across Europe. We remember Stickybuds perform his first festival Shambhala in 2005, so we’re thrilled to see him perpetually raise the bar.

We stumbled upon this nice little tune while doing homework late last night. Already at 100,00 plays and not surprising as it features two of the doodiest doods in the scene at the moment. Always a treat to see unlikely allies Shlohmo -> A skinny white kid from LA with a splashed out, genius brain for making music and Jeremih -> an R&B singer with the voice of a male angel, swimming in more pussy than the internet for cat memes (which by the way this is our favorite right now). Only thing is we’re wondering how long it’s going to take Ghostface Killah to find out about this colab for Jeremih to end up on his “softest nigga’s in the game” list. Anyway we had to share the tune. The lovely couple also made a little youtube video that documents just how wet a twenty something woman gets when either of these guys walk into a room.

Our friend Phil David decided to do a little mix for us here at Slowdjs to, not only promote his upcoming show with Breakbot (Paris), but also remind us just how much we love … you guessed it … HOUSE!

For many of us at slow, house is what originally got us into the electronic scene here in Canada in the late 1990′s. Those were dark days for what people like to refer to now as “EDM.” Standing in line at grungy loading-bays of weird buildings in industrial districts 30kms away from the city, flyering outside clubs that played Top 40 to try to get people to come to your house night on a Monday (which is basically the only night that you’d get from a bar owner at the time because they thought your music was weird), and paying $40 for a can of Redbull, because it was illegal in your Province, off your buddy that was always skipping school. Ah the ol’ days! But seriously, look how far we’ve come! I won’t get into the details of how far we’ve actually come because the Martinez Brothers Pepsi feature will shine some light on that … but it’s pretty darn far. Now we can barely get on the g-list at a DJ Sneak show (which is just so awesome to see crowds flocking to an artist like Sneak).

In any case, we’re very excited about Phil’s mix and pleased to present “Count In” exclusively on slowdjs.com. A word from Phil:

“When it comes time to make a mix, I try to create something that moves along with a certain sensibility to a sound or feeling. Count In was made to expand from the sound of the previous mix, Reform, which focused on the deeper, low-end side of electronic music. Count In opens up to different sub-genres of house music that spend their time just above the water, but not far enough down the length to dive in headfirst. The name of the mix refers to the basic tenets of DJing, the recording process, and the instrument that makes it all go: the drum machine. I believe that it’s important to know the history behind what you’re doing. Learning the history of house and electronic music, I developed a strong curiosity of drum machines and step sequencers – how they work, sound, and how they defined generations of music.

A friend of mine told me, “In order to guide it, you have to know where it came from.” Count In is my salute to the classics and represents the direction that I want to take the music and where I want to be within it. Tap along and have fun with it.”

The winter season tends to put a damper on partygoers trying to make
the most of the cold long dark days indoors. Meanwhile on the other
side of the world, Australia is bustling with festivals taking
advantage of the combined summer-holiday season. Despite being
isolation from the rest of the world, December through March attracts
big name artists looking for a break from the miserable northern
hemisphere, making Australia a hub for world class acts.

This year I ventured out to one of Australia’s best-known electronic
music festivals, Summa Fieldayze on the Gold Coast, put on by Future
Entertainment. Over the past fourteen years it has grown from a one
off show to a multi massive-tent festival that travels across
Australia visiting the cities of Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, and the
Gold Cost. This years line up included a spectrum of DJs and live
talent with; The Chemical Brothers, M.I.A., Hot Chip, Booka Shade,
Kimbra, Maya Jane Coles, Eddie Halliewell, SBTRKT, Fedde Le Grand,
Mark Ronson, Carl Craig 69 (live), AN21 & Max Vangelli, Disclosure
(live), Adrian Lux, Fake Blood, Hudson Mohawke, Scuba, Aeroplane,
Krafty Kuts & A-Skillz, Jesse Rose and many more.

I like to think of the Gold Cost as the “Miami-Vegas” of Australia,
filled with beach bums, limousines, tourists, and resort style hotels
towering over the long stretch of surf beaches. It’s a great refuge
for festivalgoers especially with the organization of shuttles that
take you ten minutes up the beach to Doug Jennings Park where the
festival is located. Even though Summa Dayze starts at 11:00 am, it
didn’t hurt showing up at 3:00 pm to avoid the 29°C burning heat. The
grounds where dry and grassy, but a comfortable place for fives stages,
rides, food trucks, sponsor showcases, and a few shady trees. The three main
stages were set side by side, divided by bars, making it quick and
easy to grab a drink and change stages with out missing much of your
favorite artists. Most staff and services were fast and friendly,
which made for a good vibe all around, especially if you needed a
splash of cold water from the Rave Safe Crowed Care.

What stood out the most for me where the groups of tanned ripped
bodies flaunting themselves in little to no clothing. Ok I get it,
we’re located near a beach, but it also had me questioning if the drug
of choice was steroids? There were still your traditional Aussie beach
bums and people in random costumes, helping to set a scene of over
joyed people dancing in the sun on holiday.

I spent most of my time at the Cross stage, a line up made for
house-techno lovers. First I caught Scuba, whom played a lot of techno
classics while keeping up with the momentum from the adjacent stages.
After was Carl Craig’s 69 live set. Trying to appreciate the unique
use of live loops and voxs you wouldn’t normally hear from a DJ set,
his deep dark mood in music seemed to scare people away. Nonetheless,
high in demand Maya Jane Coles quickly picked things up by
effortlessly blending a variety of house and techno, giving the crowed
an up-beat progressive set they couldn’t escape.

Meanwhile the Summa stage seemed to be the most popular as the crowed
went nuts over acts like Eddie Halliwell, AN21 & Max Vangeli, and Mark
Ronson. M.I.A. banged out her heavy bass beats dressed up in a green
keffiyeh and large gold shirt. Sporting Australia’s colours? Besides
the over run echo on her mic and spontaneous feed back blips, M.I.A.
gave it a full on performance singing most of her hits including
“Paper Plans”, “Bad Girls”, “Bucky Done Gone”, and a remix of Gangnum
Style with her “Hussel” track which got the Aussie crowed going wild.

Back to the Cross stage, Booka Shade’s bright lively set really got
peoples attention, especially when they performed “Body Language” early on in their set.
Rarely seen DJing anymore, The Chemical Brothers gave the festival the
perfect end playing an ecstatic electronic set along with an
illuminating light show of bright flashing lasers and strobes for that
full on classic rave experience.

Compared to many other festivals I’ve been to around the world,
Australia offers the best bang for your buck. Considering the long
list of international talent, I liked how there were just enough
people to make the crowed exciting and vibrant, but not too many where
you start to lose your friends and spend half the time waiting in
lineups. Although it is technically the rainy season, the worst of
your concern is dust and the risk of dehydration, nothing compared to
the rain, mud, cold, sand, and bugs other festivals are renown for.

Flying to Australia during the festival season wont come cheap, so if
you are going to make your way down under, make the most of it by
giving yourself lots of time to venture around. As for the festivals,
the popular ones can sell out fast including the accommodation near
by. So try to plan at least three months in advance, otherwise there
are tons of smaller summer events happening all over the country.

Blondtron, what or who inspires you to approach music with such fucking fun?

So many people and things inspire me, I’m inspired a lot by comedy, I know that sounds a bit weird for a musician but I think comedy is one of the most important things in the world to me. Putting yourself out there and laughing at and with yourself is such a powerful way to get to know who you are. It helps me to break down barriers and connect. I’m also inspired by sexual energy, not just by sex itself but I wholeheartedly believe that sexual energy is what makes the world turn. Blondtron is a character and vessel for my silly, sexual energy and having that character lets me do whatever the fuck I want and have fun with it. This should be fun, always.

I’ve seen you live and I’ve heard your DJ mixes, everything is all very unpredictable
but cohesive. Is it planned that way or does it just kind of come together?

I used to plan my sets but stopped doing that a long time ago. If I plan my set I get major anxiety and feel trapped. I am really all over the place but I think what I’ve realized is that if I like it, no matter what the genre, then it’s has a place in my sound. I have always been scattered in my interests. My teen years swallowed me into trying all the different scenes and spat me out a very confused but eclectic young woman. It’s taken me years to embrace that and make it my own. Now I’m just like “fuck it, yeah I like it, of course I’m gonna play White Town in the middle of this Bounce set, it works, fuck you.” I think I really hit my stride with my first ‘Bouncin’ Bush Stew feat. Prince Zimboo’. It got put up on Mad Decent and people were like, what the F is this, but they liked it so that really helped my confidence and now I think there is a quiet cohesion in the madness.

That being said do you plan your live DJ sets? Do you have an opinion on that at all?

I don’t, I have, but it really doesn’t work for me. Some people they have to or that makes them feel more confident. I really don’t think it matters either way, you have to do whatever is going to make you feel best on stage. If you plan your set, if you fly by the seat of your pants, hell if you even get up there and play a mixtape but you’re rocking out, then fuck it. The act of mixing two songs together is pretty simple and I wish everyone would shut up about it being an art. It’s not, you’re playing other people’s music, how you present it, the energy you give off your ability to connect with the crowd, that’s the art.

What does the future of DJing look like to you? Are you one of those people that feel
technology is taking DJ culture hostage or do you embrace it with loving arms?

I embrace it all with loving arms and don’t really have time for those dinosaurs that whine about it. People whining about a technology that matches the BPM for you is like a fax machine being like, “UMMM HELLO, you don’t have to email, I’M RIGHT HERE.” It’s stupid.

I grew up playing records and it was great and I know my ears for mixing aren’t what they used to be but I’m doing so much more now. I have ableton set up with the bridge in Serato, I have a little sampler, dicers, all sorts of fun shit. Now it feels like just mixing two songs with two turntables is like painting with only two colours. It’s not a bad thing, it’s just not for me anymore.

What bothers me are these DJs that aren’t adapting their live show with the times. I mean if you’re a classic old school cat, you do you, but there are so many possibilities, with visuals and gear and if you aren’t innovating then you’re going to be left behind in some dingy bar, whining about traktor and how kids these days have no respect.

You have a very special show coming up called Valentwerk @ Fortune Sound, what
is that all about?

It’s about fun! I love twerking and dancing and shaking my ass so much and Valentwerk is just about getting loose and letting that sexual energy run rampant in a safe and fun environment.

The idea of couples tickets and the overall promo of this event is quite unique, Lady as
well headlining a night of unorthodox Valentines celebration gets a nod as well.

Yeah the Fortune crew is pretty good at keeping things fresh, this is no exception.

I find female artists such as Lady, Azealia Banks, Kreyshawn and Rhianna who are
very unapologetic in their approach have been gaining a lot of momentum lately,
actually it seems even male performers are saying things I never heard before. Am I
late to this party or is it the last couple years we’ve seen it a bit more?

I think we’re definitely seeing it a lot more now thanks to the internet and trailblazers. I mean when a collective consciousness is ready to boil over, it does. It’s hard to say where it starts and of course there are your Peaches, and Lil’ Kims and Sissy Nobbys and Big Friedas and Scissor Sisters that have been doing it for forever. I think people get sick of everyone telling them what they are. “Oh you’re a sexy girl DJ, Oh you’re a girl rapper, oh you’re gay? You can’t be a gangster rapper.” All this shit gets exhausting. I think the internet is a powerful tool for encouraging these artists to practice their art and be themselves. Of course there will always be your trolls commenting ‘faggot’ and ‘slut’ on everything they can but that is so much less powerful than connecting with a fan that just totally understands you half way across the world.

I bring it up because I find you to come across the same way. DJ mixes that range
from garage to hardstyle and photos with pieces of food covering your privates, all
of that is so raw and in your face. Has this always been you? Is this what completes
the Blondtron package?

I think I’ve really connected with my ‘pussy power’ and it’s fucking liberating. People will say, ‘what if you want to run for mayor one day and you have all these pictures with cheeseburgers on your boobs and fried eggs on your butt.’ Well if this guy can do it, then so can I. I refuse to believe that silliness, openness, and oneness with self will ever be detrimental to my future. You see these young girls getting slut-shamed for showing their bodies but that’s all they ever see everywhere they look and we’re not helping them by saying, ‘Don’t do that, you should wear pant suits and be serious and then one day you could be the first female president.’ I get really frustrated by this misguided feminism ranting about all the negative female tropes in society. Instead of yelling why not rise above and make fun of it? Be better than it, be your own sexual deviant and then no one can ever call you a slut without making themselves look stupid.

Is there anyone else locally that you feel is bending the rules a bit?

Oh I am obsessed with TLC (Tropical Love Connection) at The Biltmore on Wednesdays. This is what it’s all about. It’s just people being out there and fun and silly and not taking anything too seriously. If you haven’t been, GO. You can also check out my promo mix I did for them last month.

Lastly, give us a bit of insight into what we are going to hear on your long awaited
slowcast?

This slowcast is totally different from anything I’ve ever made, it’s a two hour vibes journey that I made with the thought of inviting someone over in the evening. That being said I’ve totally done the dishes to it, but it’s meant to be shared with someone.

Another attention finger is being cast at one relatively unheard of name in the game, Mohegan Son. This NYC based selectah enjoys serving things large in the realms of bass, juke and footwerk. It might be an idea to keep at least one of those pivoting sight seers on this son. Supposably he has some upcoming releases with the likes of Freshmore and #FEELINGS out in Texas.

Indeed it is Valentine’s Day and what better a way to celebrate the famous martyr, Saint Valentine, than by listening to music that was produced with one thing in mind … makin’ love. Ricco has whipped up a buttery little mix for us that features some of the chilliest, laidback, R&B-meets-electronic jams that we’ve all been grooving to as of late as well as some classics that every break-up or make-up just can’t be experienced without. Inspired by the act of sex (actually) we encourage this mix to be played whilst getting down, before getting down, or that moment after you’ve gotten down and you’re trying to break that awkward silence (which may ultimately lead to more getting down). “Besides sex, this mix actually means a few more things to me. I’ve been playing around with Abelton for a few months now and, besides being confused as to why I haven’t been playing with Abelton sooner, am amazed at how powerful the program is. You normally can’t manipulate music as much on turntables and for years I’ve had ideas regarding how I’d want music I hear to sound a bit different then its supposed to be played at. Abelton gives you that manipulation tool and this mix is just the beginning for me as I have already started to test the waters of producing my own music under a new alias, J∆ck∆L. This mix also commemorates the passing away of a close family member of mine on Feb 13, 2001 (RIP). His father, a well-dressed thief known for carrying a cache of weapons inside a steel drum, taught Romeo about marauding and defrauding at a very early age. Since then, he’s fleeced more fools than The North Face, stealing whatever he can, including the Golden Titty, which belonged to the dangerous Jamaican “Blouse an’ Skirt Posse”.

Having collected funk and disco records since he was just a yute, it wasn’t long till he figured out just how small bits of those records fit nicely on the 16 pads of his MPC 2000xl; and subsequently, how to rearrange those bits of records onto new records of their own.

Then came DJing. Flash forward a few years, and this dummy’s played with all kinds of people, all over North America, including the Shambhala Music Festival (Canada), The Rub and Flashing Lights (NYC), SXSW (Austin), and Mexico.

When he’s not writing self-congratulatory bio’s, or sleeping with his socks on, Monsieur le Romeo continues his quixotic journey through the landscape of house, disco, and techno, armed only with a winning smile and delusional self-confidence. If your party needs some step, Wax Romeo will get here fast, driving his empty brown limousine in the carpool lane. Get aroused.

Never comfortable with being labelled, Sam can skate over most sonic landscapes and likes to play with the listeners imagination. Sam’s mixture of the tribal patterns of Moombahton, the electronic chaos of Techno, and the low end of emerging house derivatives creates an interesting harmony. Tempos don’t matter, genres don’t matter, the music speaks for itself.

In the last few years Sam has has the pleasure to share the stage with the likes of: Nadastrom, Dillon Francis, Ghislain Poirer, Daedalos, Nosaj Thing, Jack Beats, Gemini, 12th Planet, Skrillex, U-Tern, Dj Numark and many others. Sam’s previous festival sets: Shambhala (2010), Rifflandia (2010-11) & Soundwave (2009).

2012 is set to be a big year for Sam with his focus on releasing original music, expanding the Sea2Sky Mix series, and maybe cleaning up his studio.

A few weeks back Vice magazine published a rather abrasive interview with Jeremy Rose; the former producer for Canadian R&B sensation The Weeknd. Common knowledge amongst Jeremy’s peers and fans, but unfamiliar to thousands of The Weeknd’s fans, is that Jeremy had a pretty big part in the formation and production of The Weeknd and “their” first mixtape “House of Balloons”. Since then there has been a falling out between the two, and it seems like Jeremy got the short end of the stick. I’m just here to listen though, if you want the real nitty gritty you’re going to have to find some sort of future r&b gossip site. Who is Sampha?

One of the best listening experiences of last year was SBTRKT’s self titled debut album. While the instrumental and guest vocals were on point, it was really the voice of one dude that held it all together. That dude was Sampha, an R&B singer from London unknown at the time in most dubstep circles. That has all changed though. Sampha who featured on SBTRKT’s album, is now someone most would actually consider a working member of SBTRKT. In fact when I saw them play a few weeks ago, Sampha introduced themselves as SBTRKT. The evolution of SBTRKT, from mainly instrumental to future R&B has been interesting, but what’s more, is the sound Sampha calls home. Check him out below.

Remember these?  Well the Legendary Lotus Long weekend parties have moved to The Waldorf and r i c c o will be playing alongside The Lawnchair Generals in the House room.  Waldorf is actually a pretty sweet venue.  Three rooms three vibes and three is company (why Xena Warrior Princess is in that video we have no idea, but it would be kinda cool if someone dressed up like her or better yet XENA ACTUALLY SHOWS UP).  Wikipedia describes Xena Warrior Princess as “a warrior in a quest to seek redemption for her past sins as a ruthless warlord by using her formidable fighting skills to help people.”  Aren’t we all kind of ruthless warriors with terrible pasts on a quest for redemption?  If you’ve reached that “fork” in your quest and you’re unsure about whether to use your powers for good or evil, just remember that there’s always Alcohol to help you decide.  See you there?

Oh yes!  The time has come for us to once again amass at Vancouver’s number one nightlife establishment, Fortune Sound Club. On Saturday July 2nd Slowdjs.com and Experience Saturdays presents: The Other Guys @ Fortune Sound Club.  We think you kind of understand what we mean when we say “other guys.”  Remember in high school when there was that crowd that wasn’t quite the “in” crowd but were still killing it in their own regard?  They’d be hanging at the same house parties but weren’t necessarily getting all rowdy to impress Becky Felcher just for a chance at walking her to the local 7-11 while she got an Orbitz in between Chemistry and P.E. blocks.  Well now the other guys are making things happen while the “in” crowd either lives in their parent’s basement suit or are shift supervisors at the local box making factory.  Let this event be a showcase to all those young aspiring “in crowd hopefuls” that the “in” crowd is actually not so “in.”  Be comfy with yourself, stay away from drugs and listen to your parents (because they love you).  We love you too and will see you at Fortune for the party.  Oh and we’re also helping fundraise for The Underwear Affair which is kind of a cool thing too.

TOMS shoes, Ayden Gallery and Sitka Surf threw a bit of a shin-dig Feb 18th at the Ayden Gallery in Vancouver.  Slowdjs representative r i c c o was involved in the event which hosted 500+ people on a clear full moon Friday.  49 artists from around the globe painted on TOMS shoes for the TOMS one for one campaign (with every pair purchased TOMS will donate a pair to children in need).  The TOMS business model goes against conventional manufacturing models in which it recognizes a third constraint … poverty.  Pictures from the event coming soon.
