Vol. 028 – Expendable Youth

EXPENDABLE YOUTH are a duo based out of Vancouver, BC comprised of Matt ExYouth & Jimmy Escobar. Holding it down as one of Blueprint Events’ (Western Canada’s largest electronic music promoter) resident DJs for the past few years, they’ve come to be known and respected for their love & mastery of club music that spans every imaginable genre, international border & tempo. With an ear for future forward sounds, they are respected for their ability to highlight emerging club music trends and play masterfully to rooms both big & small.
In November, 2011 Mad Decent launched its web based sub-label Jeffree’s with their 1st release being Expendable Youth’s “HEYO!” : “Expendable Youth’s Heyo! has been a secret weapon among Mad Decent DJ’s for a few months now and we are extremely excited to present it to you as our first free Jeffree’s release!” The label has since pioneered a release system that has given home to the emergence of club music trends that would have otherwise had to navigate through a convoluted and archaic record label system, with releases including Baauer’s now infamous “Harlem Shake” among dozens of other club anthems. Recent notable releases include an official DIPLO remix of “Set It Off” with Vancouver’s Krusha & collaborations with Baauer, CRNKN, and others lined up. The duo are currently working on a follow up EP of original material and collaborations.
Expendable Youth help curate a night & brand w/ Blueprint Events in Vancouver called #FVDED that focuses primarily on Bass music (of all varieties). It’s anchored by a weekly Wednesday that takes place at Celebrities NIghtclub, and extends beyond the weekly to one-off events like their #SSFVDED boat party w/ RL Grime & Samo Sound Boy June 1st & #FVDEDinthePARK at Malkin Bowl w/ Zeds Dead, Adventure Club & Felix Cartal June 30th.

Griffin aka BOGL, is a self-taught DJ and music enthusiast originally from Las Vegas, NV. His mystery carries deeper than the hood of his sweater; you never quite know when he will be showcasing all new exclusive music from his friends abroad at some unique Dubstep, Hip Hop, or House music party exposing your ears to the freshest sounds you’ve yet to hear. Bogl rolls with a posse he named Soundpieces bringing in the latest and greatest artists to San Francisco for years. The charisma he carries is like that of a friendly ghost; yet his style is so mind-boggling, he basically exists as an untouchable phenomenon. He’s become known for appearing out of what might seem to be thin air, playing a cocktail of low frequency sounds that will take you to an unfathomable dimension, and then vanishing to a far off place. It makes you wonder, is it even possible Bogl really exists?

Emerging from Montréal’s famed Peer Pressure party crew, Matt Morein, aka DJ Hatchmatik (Hatch) is a world- renowned DJ/producer living and working in Montréal, Canada. Initially a b-boy turned professional dancer and visual artist, the rise of peer pressure marked Hatch’s shift to focusing on music full-time. As Peer Pressure parties gained word of mouth notoriety for having the best djs and craziest crowds across the city, soon came bigger venues, cover stories, celebrity guests and tour- ing. Blogs posted and praised hatch’s work on remixes of Thunderheist, M.I.A., and Chromeo (featuring Sound Pellegrino label boss Teki Latex), and in-deed on XMU and Discobelle snatched him up for their mix series’.
Hatch’s first official remix – of MTO’s ‘Bring It On Now’ was released on NYC label Coco Machete records in 2008, and in 2009, Hatch toured Europe and Asia, and was selected for URB Magazine’s lauded next 100 list.
Turning to the world of fashion, Hatch took a break from the road and the studio at the end of 2009 to launch OLDgOLDBOUTIQUE.com – a full-feature online acces- sories boutique featuring TRANSMISSION:OLDgOLD, a podcast series curated by Hatch himself. 2010 saw the launch of Skavonost Chic – described in his own words as a “personal tumblr blog focusing on but not limited to personal style photos, sartorial inspiration, and put- ting things on my scanner”. This new direction has lead to commissioned mixes for Canadian fashion giant Le Château, Montréal menswear start-up Frank & Oak, art fashion and culture quarterly Snap! Magazine, as well as Hatch blogging for Huffington Post Canada Style.

Vol. 010 – Sam Demoe

It’s not the destination so much as the journey, and with that in mind Vancouver’s SAM DEMOE has truly taken music’s scenic route. From checking mics and cutting it up on Vancouver Island as a young hiphop
enthusiast to DJ’n alongside some of Electronic Dance Music’s most colourful characters, Sam has kept one mantra in tact: Keep them dancing.
Sam’s DJ sets are constantly evolving; expect only the freshest sounds that make you want to get low, yell at the sky, and stomp your feet. Never comfortable with being labelled, Sam can skate over most sonic landscapes and likes to play with the listeners imagination. Sam’s mixture of the tribal patterns of Moombahton, the electronic chaos of Techno, and the low end of emerging house derivatives creates an interesting harmony. Tempos don’t matter, genres don’t matter, the music speaks for itself.
In the last few years Sam has has the pleasure to share the stage with the likes of: Nadastrom, Dillon Francis, Ghislain Poirer, Daedalos, Nosaj Thing, Jack Beats, Gemini, 12th Planet, Skrillex, U-Tern, Dj Numark and many others. Sam’s previous festival sets: Shambhala (2010), Rifflandia (2010-11) & Soundwave (2009).
2012 is set to be a big year for Sam with his focus on releasing original music, expanding the Sea2Sky Mix series, and maybe cleaning up his studio.
